Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 19, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains what information QuakeSight ("we", "us") collects when you use the QuakeSight mobile application (the "App"), how we use it, and the choices you have. We built QuakeSight to need as little personal information as possible: the App requires no account, and we never sell your data or show ads.

Information we collect

Location information

QuakeSight can use your device's location for two purposes, and only with your permission:

  • Centering the map. When you allow location access, the App uses your current position to center the earthquake map on where you are. This position is used on your device and is not stored on our servers.
  • Creating notification rules. When you create an earthquake alert, you choose a location (which may be your current location or any point you pick on the map), a radius, and a minimum magnitude. These rule settings — the coordinates of the circle's center, its radius, the magnitude threshold, and the selected data catalog — are stored on our servers so that we can match incoming earthquakes against your rules and deliver notifications. Alert locations are places you explicitly choose; the App does not track or record your movements in the background.

Push notification tokens

To deliver earthquake alerts, we store a push notification token for each of your devices, issued through Apple's and Expo's push notification services. Tokens are used solely to send you the alerts you configured. Tokens that become invalid (for example, after you uninstall the App) are disabled automatically.

Purchases and subscriptions

Subscriptions to QuakeSight Pro are processed by Apple through your App Store account. We do not receive your name, payment details, or billing address. We use RevenueCat, a subscription management service, to verify your subscription status; RevenueCat identifies your installation with an anonymous identifier, not your identity.

Usage and diagnostics

We use PostHog, an analytics service, to collect aggregate usage information (such as which screens are used and which features are popular) and diagnostic information about errors and crashes. This helps us understand how the App is used and fix problems. This data is associated with an anonymous identifier, not your name or email.

Earthquake data

Earthquake information shown in the App comes from public, third-party scientific sources, including the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). Requests for this data are made through our servers; these sources do not receive your personal information from us.

How we use information

  • To display earthquakes on the map and in lists;
  • To match reported earthquakes against your alert rules and deliver push notifications;
  • To verify QuakeSight Pro entitlements;
  • To diagnose crashes and improve the App.

We do not sell or rent your information, and we do not use it for advertising.

Data sharing

We share data only with the service providers that make the App work: our backend hosting provider (Convex), push delivery services (Apple and Expo), subscription management (RevenueCat and Apple), and analytics (PostHog). Each provider processes data solely on our behalf. We may also disclose information if required by law.

Data retention and deletion

Notification rules are stored for as long as you keep them; deleting a rule in the App removes it from our servers. Push tokens are disabled when they become invalid. If you would like any data associated with your installation deleted, contact us at [email protected] and we will honor your request.

Children

QuakeSight is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Security

Data is transmitted over encrypted connections and stored with reputable infrastructure providers. No system is perfectly secure, but we limit what we collect so there is little to lose.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by the "Last updated" date above, and continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
